Editor’s Note: 31-year old Jason Cook lives in Lebanon, Kansas, 9 miles west of Kansas City. He’s been hunting turkeys since he was 6-years old and started guiding hunters to deer when he was 16. He’s the owner of Land of Giants (https://huntlandofgiants.com/about/) and leases 30,000+ acres of prime deer-hunting land with some 200” bucks. He also guides duck hunters in Kansas and Canada. “My goal always has been not to be a typical outfitter,” Cook explains. “I want to run my guiding business completely different from how all other guides do.”

Some years ago a TV host asked Jason Cook if he could put a client on a 200-inch free-range deer. Cook responded with, “We kill deer better than that size each season on my Land of Giants property. But to be able to find a deer like that, pattern him and put a hunter in a spot where I’m confident he can take that deer will require a vast amount of time, scouting and money. However, I can do it.”

So, Cook decided that he’d take up the challenge and work with a team of guides who would look for, find and pattern free-range bucks that would score 200 inches or more. He worked with hunters who were willing to pay the price required to lease the land and pay him and his team of scouts to watch the deer long enough to know where the deer should be on the day the hunter arrived.

Very-few people can afford that type of hunt. Usually, the largest number of hunters who hunt with Cook will hunt Monday through Friday, stay in a five-star lodge, eat delicious food and take a buck larger than 140 inches, which is the minimum score for bucks that can be harvested on the land Cook leases. Another facet of the hunt for a 200+ inch buck is that the hunter must be available the following day or at least the next day after Cook has patterned the buck. According to Cook, “We usually won’t have more than one or two hunters a year who want to take a 200-inch buck or better on this kind of hunt. But, we often have one or two hunters on our 5-day hunt that will take a 200-inch deer.”
