Editor’s Note: South Carolina’s Hank Parker won two Bassmaster Classics before he moved into hosting and producing his TV shows, “Hank Parker’s Outdoor Magazine” and “On the Water with Hank Parker.” Parker manages the ponds on his farm intensively for bass and fishes them regularly. He says, “Each farm pond is different and isn’t created or maintained in the same way. The history of the pond itself and the type of pond it is impacts how, where and when you’ll catch bass there. A friend has nine farm ponds – each with its own personality. I’ll fish different lures in each lake for bass. One of the ponds remains muddy almost all year, while another is crystal clear with little structure in it. Yet another pond homes plenty of structure. The clarity of the water, the type of pond and the kind of pond structure all play very-important roles in your lure selection and your bass-fishing success.”

The more bait fish the bass have to eat, the faster they’ll grow. So, I’ll put truckloads of shad in my ponds during May – July. I’ll use feeders also to make sure my pond’s bluegills have plenty to eat, because the bass feed heavily on bluegills too. I’ll use Mossy Oak Perfect Pond Plus fertilizer to keep the pond’s water as fertile as possible.

However, I realize I don’t take enough small bass out of my ponds every year. Fishermen today have been so indoctrinated on catch-and-release that even small bass have become sacred cows. But these bass are delicious to eat. Unless you take them out, you’ll have too many bass in your pond and won’t produce bigger bass.

When I first started managing for bass in my farm ponds, they grew phenomenally at about 1-1/2 pounds per year. I was catching 3-pound, 2-year-old bass. However, today, due to my being on the road so much and not able to take a large number of smaller bass out like I should, my bass are only growing about 1/2-pound per year.

If you spot an otter slide, an otter or signs of beavers in or around a pond, realize otters will catch and kill the biggest bass in your pond. They’ll leave and perhaps return the next year, if not removed. Beavers may dam-up your overflow pipe and your spillways and cut-down valuable timber around the pond. Always keep the pond owner advised of any of these animals or signs of them, and pick up any trash you see. If you take a pond’s small bass to eat, make sure the landowner understands why.
