Some hunters want to let a turkey get as close as he’ll come before they pull their triggers. Once when I was guiding, I had a hunter miss a gobbler at eight steps. Never forget that you want to have as many pellets going toward that turkey’s head and neck area as possible. If you try to shoot a turkey at a really-close range, your pattern doesn’t have a chance to open-up. Then you’re almost shooting a pattern just a little bit bigger than a rifle bullet is, which means if a turkey twists his head or neck, ducks, looks in a different direction or takes a step, you’ll miss him.
I like to take a turkey at a distance of between 20 and 40 yards because that’s the distance I know my gun shoots the size of pattern best that’s required to down a gobbler. The problem with the hunter who missed a tom at eight steps was that she was my daughter. I could tell from the turkey’s gobbling that he probably would pop up out in front of us really close. So, I whispered to my daughter, “Don’t shoot for the turkey’s head when you see him, since you‘ll probably miss. Instead, shoot for his body because at that range you can kill him with a body shot.”
Either she shot at the turkey’s head, or she picked her cheek up off the stock and missed. I felt sorry for her when she started crying because she’d missed the turkey. I tried to console her, but then I started crying too.
This hunt had been a textbook hunt. The gobbler came across a clear cut from 400-yards away and walked up to where he was supposed to die, but he didn’t.
