Tips for Taking More Turkeys Day 4: Why Hunters Miss Turkeys Far Away

Editor’s Note: Matt Kelly of Alabama has been hunting turkeys for 40 years and guiding to turkeys for 12 years.

Often a hunter will miss a gobbler because he tries to take a turkey that’s too far away from him or her. The new TSS loads have solved the problem of shooting at a turkey too far for most people due to TSS loads having denser patterns and heavier loads. However, I’ve still had hunters with TSS loads try to shoot a turkey at 100 yards. Many hunters don’t know how to judge distance according to the terrain of the land they are hunting. But for most people, with today’s guns and loads, the most-effective killing range is 40 yards.

One of the best hunting tools for a turkey hunter is a range finder. Once you sit down beside a tree or behind a blind, pull your range finder out. Pinpoint some landmarks at 20, 30 and 40 yards out to set-up a killing zone. Then you’ll know that when a turkey steps out at any one of those ranges that you can pull the trigger.

I know many hunters use the TSS turkey loads for their shotguns, but I don’t. I prefer to shoot Winchester’s XR turkey loads.
