Editor’s Note: Mike Pentecost, the founder and owner of Woodhaven Custom Calls, Inc., in Heflin, Alabama, has been hunting turkeys for more than 40 years – spending most of his hunting life on public lands. He had a burning desire to build the best possible turkey calls when he started his business in his grandparents’ basement in the 1980s. His passion led to the development of his well-known calls – the Red Wasp and the Cherry Classic Crystal (all made in the USA). His company always has given superior customer service. As Pentecost explains, “I want to always have the faith and the courage to continue following the Lord and doing my best.”

Mike Pentecost will be 61 at the end of May, 2023. I asked him how-many turkey hunts he goes on each year. He explained, “I’m not as mad at turkeys as I once was. I told the boys I hunt with that, ‘When you’re a young turkey hunter, you want to find and kill gobblers. However, to accomplish that may require 1- 3 years. After you’ve taken a gobbler, next you’ll want to take several toms. Then you’ll get really mad at turkeys because you haven’t been able to take all the turkeys you want to take. When you arrive at the highest level of turkey hunting, your goal is to make the gobbler look stupid and make him do something he’s not supposed to do. Once I can make a turkey do something that he knows he’s not supposed to do, then that’s the biggest reward I can have – whether I squeeze the trigger, or someone else with me does.”

Today Pentecost is teaching his sons and other people how to hunt on public lands. On the opening of Youth Weekend in Alabama, he took four youngsters for their hunts on public lands.

“I like taking young people and new people to introduce them to the sport of turkey hunting and teach them how to hunt turkeys on public lands. Today, if I can call a turkey within gun range, I don’t care who pulls the trigger. When I went to Mexico a few years ago and took a Gould’s turkey, I looked at my hunting partners and announced, “Boys, that’s it. I don’t need to kill another turkey. I’ve already taken all the turkeys I need to take. I just want to call them in for other people and let those folks enjoy the thrill of hearing a wild turkey, seeing a wild turkey, having the opportunity to take the turkey, and lastly downing that bird to take him home for supper.”
