Editor’s Note: Trey Montgomery of West Greene, Alabama, has been hunting turkeys for 46 years and guiding turkeys for 30+ years at the Lakes of Leavellwood. Although most beginning turkey hunters think that successful turkey hunting depends on their abilities to call turkeys, Montgomery has found over the years that there are several critical ingredients to consistently taking a longbeard. This week we’ll explore Montgomery’s techniques to help you hunt turkeys more effectively.
I learned that generally when a turkey was named, he was a sour, older tom. We had an old turkey named The Mop at Leavellwood, where I guided because his beard was as thick as a mop. This turkey’s beard was about four fingers wide and swung from side to side as he walked. I had called him a couple of times, and the other guides had called him several times. We had gotten The Mop in close enough for our hunters to see him but not close enough for any of our hunters to squeeze their triggers on him. This turkey roosted on an adjoining landowner’s property, about two pastures between our land and the other place. The Mop had to walk across those two open pastures and go under a fence to get to where my hunter and I were set up to answer our calls.
We finally took this tom late one season. We had hunted him enough to know he would come across the pastures and almost get to where we could take him. He’d often call up some hens, and they would intercept him and take him away from us before anyone could get the shot. We waited until almost the end of the season before we hunted him again when the hens were on their nests. Once we called to him, he gobbled and started coming, possibly expecting to find that one hen that hadn’t gone to her nest. This bird demonstrated that we could call him, but we also knew we couldn’t get him into gun range. However, at the end of the season, when The Mop was hoping to get lucky and find a hen that hadn’t gone to the nest, we finally took him.
