You Can Take More Turkeys Day 3: Be Where a Turkey Wants to Go

Editor’s Note: Trey Montgomery of West Greene, Alabama, has been hunting turkeys for 46 years and guiding turkeys for 30+ years at the Lakes of Leavellwood. Although most beginning turkey hunters think that successful turkey hunting depends on their abilities to call turkeys, Montgomery has found over the years that several critical ingredients are needed to take a longbeard consistently. This week, we’ll explore Montgomery’s techniques to help you hunt turkeys more effectively.

From hunting The Mop bird (see Day 2), I learned that even if you knew where a turkey wanted to be, you wouldn’t get him if you weren’t there when he wanted to be there. You had to be willing to wait until the last part of turkey season when he didn’t have any girlfriends with him, call softly, and wait a long time. Then you could take a bird like this. I knew where we’d set up to call this bird so that he could hear us calling. He almost would come into gun range, and that’s the reason why I thought we could take him at the end of the season.

Remember that when that tom gobbled, he expected any hen within earshot to come to him and breed them. However, once he gobbled and his hens didn’t go to him, especially at the end of the season, he would find any hen that answered him when he gobbled.

When a turkey starts coming to you, he controls the hunt—no matter how long it takes to get to you, what route it takes, or how much it gobbles before it reaches you. These are the unknowns of turkey hunting. Most of the time, you can’t make him do what he doesn’t, even if you are in the place he wants to be.
