You Can Take More Turkeys Day 5: Enjoy a Non-Textbook Turkey Hunt

Show This to Your Friends:

Editor’s Note: Trey Montgomery of West Greene, Alabama, has been hunting turkeys for 46 years and guiding turkeys for 30+ years at the Lakes of Leavellwood. Although most beginning turkey hunters think that successful turkey hunting depends on their abilities to call turkeys, Montgomery has found over the years that several critical ingredients are needed to consistently take a longbeard. This week, we’ll explore Montgomery’s techniques to help you hunt turkeys more effectively.

I’ve learned that you have to hunt turkeys every opportunity you have, and probably not the same turkey. I’ve learned that there are no two turkey hunts that are just alike. There are very few times when you’re calling to a gobbler that he’ll come from the direction you expect him to come. Even though you do everything right, a predator can spook a tom, other hens can get to him before he reaches you and cause him to walk off, or there’s some barrier he doesn’t want to cross – like a creek, a river, a scrub or a place where he’s been shot at or spooked before- may be present. On the day a turkey comes straight to you, you’ll remember that time forever. When that happens, you’ll probably think you are the world’s most excellent turkey hunter and know everything about getting a turkey to move to you.

However, if you hunt the next morning, that gobbler you try to take on your second day may serve you a big slice of humble pie. More than likely he’ll win the day, and you and your hunter will lose. That’s why I love turkey hunting. You must understand that every gobbler is different; each has a distinct personality, and each has various things they will and won’t do. If you figure out that you don’t know everything you need to know to kill this one turkey, you’ll try various techniques that you may not have ever attempted before. Hopefully, you’ll try one of those tactics sooner or later, and it will work for you.
